One Day & Full Time Jobs for Vets

HirePatriots is a simple program that profoundly affects the US Military, veterans and their families, especially combat veterans, wounded warriors and those suffering from combat depression. It connects them with local, patriotic citizens who need help with chores around their homes and yards.

Enlisted GIs and transitioned troops often need extra income to make ends meet and to support their families. Helping out local residents and small business owners by doing jobs for them on the weekends or when they are off duty, makes a big difference.

Cpl. Lawrence, a Navy Corpsman has taken many jobs off of the HirePatriots website. His parents are both ill and live with Lawrence, his wife and three children. “I don’t see how I could take care of everyone without HirePatriots.” He says. “And I earn enough to leave for my wife in case there are any emergencies when I deploy. It takes a lot of worry off of my shoulders and helps me to focus on doing my job.”

And many troops who have recently transitioned back to civilian life also rely on this service to keep themselves and their families afloat until they can land a full time job.

But HirePatriots also provides a practical way for community residents to meet their local GIs. Members of the community simply go to HirePatriots.com, select their location and post the job that they need done. They include the amount they want to pay and their contact info. – Local troops visit this site constantly, so these jobs are usually taken quickly.

Sometimes these jobs are taken by wounded warriors who have lost limbs. After they receive artificial limbs and physical therapy, they will start their journey back into the workplace with a One Day job posted on HirePatriots. – And these jobs also help combat warriors to recover from depression. The heartfelt greetings, appreciation and respect, evident in the residents who hire them, does wonders for raising their spirits.

Hire Patriots is a completely free website. Any company or resident that wants to hire a local GI can post their job at no cost. – We believe that whenever given a chance, every American should Hire Patriots!

Our other job board is our “Local Job Boards.” This is for communities and metro areas of the US to post local jobs opportunities. The Haircut

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing community service this week.’ The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you , I’m doing community service this week.’ The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I can not accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’ The Congressman was very happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

BOTH POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON!

Military spouses and their children are as close to being veterans as one can be without actually joining the US Military. They too have served. HirePatriots.com recognizes this and welcomes Military spouses to use our job boards.

HirePatriots.com was begun because a wife of a Marine lost her job while he was overseas. She had two small children in day care. That was $500 a month per child at the base day care center. She knew that she could not afford it. But how could she look for work with her babies with her? But she didn’t find any work. One morning the family car wasn’t there. It had been repossessed. Now she was stuck!

Her husband had been injured. She didn’t mention any of their desperate circumstances when they spoke on the phone. She lied: “”Everything is going great!” Because of his injuries, it was taking much longer than expected for him to return home.

The night that her husband did return home and saw how she and the kids were living, instead of hugging her, he yelled at her. The kids started crying. She started crying. He left, slamming the door!

It was not the homecoming either of them expected or needed. Everything went all wrong and what was very bad was now worse.

But being a Marine, he took immediate action. He knocked on my door across the way. “Sir,” he said, standing a straight as his injuries would allow. “I need to get some bills paid. Do you have any work that you need done around your home, or any repairs? I’m a good worker and I need to earn some money for my family, fast.”

HirePatriots.com, especially its local One Day job board, was created for military families like this and for all the others. I have held many job fairs. At each, there were at least 100 companies that were all hiring. – But this all ended at the beginning of 2009. That is when all of the Great Recession chickens came home to roost. Since then I have attended dozens of “job fairs.” They have all been a waste of time for virtually every job seeker who has attended.

It breaks my heart to see long lines of hundreds of people, GIs and vets, waiting sometimes for hours to get into a job fair with no jobs. They have hope and expectations. They have families to feed. Some are desperate. Some are destitute. – These job fairs are for the most part are just shams.

However, there are a few little spots of light. WorkForce, a government agency that helps employ people and veterans, has been holding mini job fairs. They find and invite local companies to their offices and then they invite a select group of vets and civilians that would fit the positions these companies need. — These have been helpful. — And job fairs that target a specific industry are always a better bet to attend.

Unfortunately, many recruiters are low level employees hired to attend job fairs. They are not really able to have meaningful conversations. They are usually young people on minimum wage that are told: “If anyone asks a question, direct them to apply on our website.” — Again, smaller, targeted job fairs are more likely to have recruiters who are more knowledgeable and helpful.

But most job fairs today, particularly Military job fairs, are being filled with trade schools and colleges that want their GI Bill money. These schools promise that they will “help place you in a job when you graduate.” – Hockey Puck!

And here is a devilish twist: Some of these trade schools have arrangements with multiple firms across the country to give their graduates jobs. And they do. But there are costs involved for “processing,” additional training, etc. And the new hires are put on probation at a very low wage. – Once their probation is over, they are told that “there are no permanent positions at this time.” Then they take in a new group of recent trade school graduates and do it again and again. – These disreputable schools flood into military job fairs to take advantage of our GIs.

Some companies do attend; but, they do not have jobs. Or they only have entry level jobs for $8 an hour. And some companies have a few highly specialized positions to fill. For instance, at a recent Military job fair, there was a company that was looking for a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. (Not too many transitioning GIs have that education.) – Why do these companies even bother to come to these fairs? — The reason is because they have contracts with government. And to help insure that they keep these lucrative contracts, they come so that they can report their sincere effort to better the lives of our military personnel.

It is time that we turn to another method for helping people find employment, especially for our GIs who are returning from years of combat. They deserve much better!

I suggest that the Transitional classes become more effective. They should have professional resume writers review and rewrite every transitioning GI’s resume. And they should be taught how to answer questions in interviews. And they should be trained to use the social networks. — This is noi doubt the most important skill in the world today: The ability to social network effectively.

The world continues to change rapidly. What worked just a year ago may be completely ineffective today. Finding a job has now become a expert skill. It is creating a new profession. But the military should recognize this changing environment and do more to insure that our volunteer Military have the proper skills that they need to properly compete for what jobs are available.

One more thing: Seriously consider becoming a business owner. That way you can be in control of your own destiny. I know thousands of GIs who have been looking for work for more than a year,many much longer. It is time for them to get creative and translate their skills and talents into forming their own business.

Lee was a fun interview. Tori was full of energy. We encouraged local residents to post jobs on the site so that Marines could earn money when they are off duty. And we encouraged local businesses to post part time and full time jobs too.

I could have talked about Marine wives, more about the need to hire veterans, and I would have enjoyed telling about some GIs who use the site. I could talk for hours! — Never enough time to say it all!

Tomorrow we appear on the two local TV News channels. And we have gotten the veteran who is helping us a couple of interviews too. — Ward Violanti was in the Air Force. Now he works for the regional leader of HirePatriots for Southern California, California Career School. The owner, Chuck Emanuele, has given us Ward to help pass out fliers around the area, talk to Marines on the base and help us do interviews.

Injured Marine & Family

Then one night, a Marine knocked on our door. He had gotten back home to his wife and two kids. He discovered that while he was in Iraq and recuperating from injuries that his wife had lost her job, their family car and that their utilities had been turned off! – Despite his extreme fatigue and injuries, he acted immediately. – He dropped his bags and began walking down the street and knocking on neighbors’ doors. He came to ours. “Sir,” he said, standing as straight as he could. “Do you have any work or repairs that I can do for you so that I can get my lights turned on in my house again?”

His entreaty hit us like a ton of bricks! Our hearts broke. – We gave him some work and some money. But we also promised to think of something so that other Marines would not have to go this. – After several days of prayer, the idea came to us of creating a free website for local patriotic citizens to use to hire Marines when they needed help with chores and repairs around their homes and yards.

We asked around and found that web companies wanted many thousands of dollars to build the website we envisioned! But we did not have the money. And so we went to prayer again. – I asked the Lord if we should take a loan on our fully paid for home. Then the phone rang. – It was a realtor canvassing our neighborhood. “I have someone in my office who wants to buy a home in your area and I am calling to see if you are interested in selling your house.” – A couple of hours later, we agreed to sell our home to the lady she brought over. And we used this money to build HireMarines.com and to pay for upgrades, job fairs, marketing materials, and marriage retreats, as well as for the hundreds of other things we thought of doing for our local warriors and residents.

It was money well spent! We helped tens of thousands of our local Marines, sailors and vets find part time and full time jobs, held a dozen job fairs with over 100 companies at each, hosted 6 marriage retreats, and several Welcome Home parties for returning regiments. – During this time a Rear Admiral in San Diego called us and asked if we could change the name of our website to make his sailors feel welcome: We became HirePatriots.com. – As well, we began a 501c3 non-profit, to collect donations for our many programs: Patriotic Hearts.

Today, our website ranks above 99.9% of all US websites. People from all across America visit HirePatriots.com. And we are rapidly establishing local HirePatriots sites in every state of our union.
My wife and I work from before sunrise to past sunset every day, trying to let more vets, residents and businesses know about our program. We write, phone, social network, talk to TV and radio personalities, and speak at hundreds of clubs, organizations and chambers. – And to support ourselves and our efforts, we solicit for sponsors for our outreach.
