Why I Use HirePatriots: By Dee McKay

Why I Use HirePatriots: By Dee McKay

Have you ever needed an extra pair of hands to help around the house? Do you have a business that occasionally needs day labor? Getting ready to do a major garage cleaning, yard clearing, house painting, or perhaps moving? Looking for more permanent employees?

Use HirePatriots.com to find and hire military personnel to give you the needed hand. You can rely on them to show up, work hard, and treat you and your job with respect. You can hire service men and women for a couple of hours, or for a few days. Hirepatriots.com also has a section for full and part time career employment opportunities.

Here is how it works. First you go to the clear and easy to use Hirepatriots.com, register and post your job opportunity. The jobs are classified by type such as painting, construction, housekeeping, etc., and the job poster determines the estimated amount of time required, and what they will pay for the work. After the job is posted, military personnel view the available jobs and contact the employers. Then you, the employer, make the arrangements as to time, location, compensation, and directions to your job.

We have used the Hirepatriots.com service many times. The kids (to us) we have hired have always performed beyond our expectations. Our first experience with them was so smooth we suspected we had just gotten lucky. We posted a painting job (the entire interior of our home), and two days later two combat veterans from Pendleton came to the house and helped us get the job done in a single day. Happily, all of our subsequent jobs have gone just as well.

Since we are getting older, we occasionally find that we need to hire someone on a same day basis. Last summer, in order to repair a fence in time for HOA review, we had to find help at the last minute. I got on Hirepatriots.com, and in less than two hours, a great young Marine from Alabama, stationed at Pendleton, arrived and did the job – in 90 degree heat – without complaint. We took him to lunch, paid him a little extra for his hard work, and sent him on his way. Oh, I almost forgot, we had SEVEN phone calls on our ad in the first hour and had to take it down within 90 minutes of posting.

You cannot lose with Hirepatriots.com. First, you are assured that your work will be done well, by legal citizens who can always use the extra cash, and you tangibly support our troops. And the best perk; you get to meet some very nice people.

Why Hire a Vet?

Why Hire a Vet?

A Marine Captain (woman) came to one of our HirePatriots job fairs. She had been blown up in Iraq on patrol. Her injuries were so serious that she was kept in a coma for almost a year. – When she awoke, she was delighted to find out that she was a mother of a daughter. (She had not known that she was pregnant when she ran over an IED.) But she was crushed to hear that she was also a widow: Her husband, a Marine Captain too, had been killed in Afghanistan while she was in coma. (He knew about his wife and daughter before his death.) – She also woke up a paraplegic.

I saw her in the electric wheelchair entering our job fair on Camp Pendleton. She looked very distressed and worried. The baby was asleep on her chest when she passed by. – The next day, in the North County Times, on the front page, was her picture leaving our job fair: She had the brightest smile I have ever seen. – In her hand were 5 job offers! –She could work and support her family. This is all our vets are asking for.

“Don’t just thank a vet. Hire a Vet!” is our current national campaign.

In my 40 years of seeking to assist US veterans, particularly combat veterans, this is what I know: It is critical that they be employed upon transitioning out of the military. They have endured a lot on behalf of our country. Many of the painful experiences they encountered will never leave their memories. – But those traumatic experiences lose their ability to disable a veteran if they are employed and able to sustain themselves and their families.

Unfortunately, ignorant stereotypes about combat veterans continue to be promoted on TV and in the movies. They too often represent these exemplary US citizens as dangerous or deranged. This is completely erroneous. Just the opposite is much closer to the truth.

Combat certainly has its horrors and sorrows that will always be a part of a vets memory. But for the vast majority those experiences actually make them stronger and better citizens. They have a characters that been hardened like steel when it goes through a furnace and then is cooled in water. They are able to persevere and to accomplish tasks regardless of the obstacles they confront.

Today’s Veterans were not drafted, they have served our country willingly. They are the best that America has to offer any employer.

Please post your jobs for free on HirePatriots.com.

It will also serve as a tool to facilitate discussion about veteran related employment issues across the nation.

“Launching a national level grassroots campaign with minimal resources is no easy task,” said Brian Butler, President of Vistra Communications and sponsor of HirePatriots Florida. “We will rely heavily of social media and online tactics to raise awareness of our campaign, and we hope to find sponsors to help with social media advertising.” The campaign will maintain a monthly newsletter, actively blog, and is searching for free advertisement opportunities. What we do to help GIs and Vets

What we do to help GIs and Vets

In 2004, we bought a home next to the Camp Pendleton Marine Base in California. The current wars had started and we saw hundreds of young men and women everyday who were either going to war or who had just returned. We felt as if everyone we saw was our own son or daughter.

Injured Marine & Family

Then one night, a Marine knocked on our door. He had gotten back home to his wife and two kids. He discovered that while he was in Iraq and recuperating from injuries that his wife had lost her job, their family car and that their utilities had been turned off! – Despite his extreme fatigue and injuries, he acted immediately. – He dropped his bags and began walking down the street and knocking on neighbors’ doors. He came to ours. “Sir,” he said, standing as straight as he could. “Do you have any work or repairs that I can do for you so that I can get my lights turned on in my house again?”

His entreaty hit us like a ton of bricks! Our hearts broke. – We gave him some work and some money. But we also promised to think of something so that other Marines would not have to go this. – After several days of prayer, the idea came to us of creating a free website for local patriotic citizens to use to hire Marines when they needed help with chores and repairs around their homes and yards.

We asked around and found that web companies wanted many thousands of dollars to build the website we envisioned! But we did not have the money. And so we went to prayer again. – I asked the Lord if we should take a loan on our fully paid for home. Then the phone rang. – It was a realtor canvassing our neighborhood. “I have someone in my office who wants to buy a home in your area and I am calling to see if you are interested in selling your house.” – A couple of hours later, we agreed to sell our home to the lady she brought over. And we used this money to build HireMarines.com and to pay for upgrades, job fairs, marketing materials, and marriage retreats, as well as for the hundreds of other things we thought of doing for our local warriors and residents.

Mark & Tori Baird

It was money well spent! We helped tens of thousands of our local Marines, sailors and vets find part time and full time jobs, held a dozen job fairs with over 100 companies at each, hosted 6 marriage retreats, and several Welcome Home parties for returning regiments. – During this time a Rear Admiral in San Diego called us and asked if we could change the name of our website to make his sailors feel welcome: We became HirePatriots.com. – As well, we began a 501c3 non-profit, to collect donations for our many programs: Patriotic Hearts.

Today, our website ranks above 99.9% of all US websites. People from all across America visit HirePatriots.com. And we are rapidly establishing local HirePatriots sites in every state of our union.
My wife and I work from before sunrise to past sunset every day, trying to let more vets, residents and businesses know about our program. We write, phone, social network, talk to TV and radio personalities, and speak at hundreds of clubs, organizations and chambers. – And to support ourselves and our efforts, we solicit for sponsors for our outreach.

Please consider pitching in and helping us to spread the word in your community. Contact us today.

The Real Way to Find a Job Today

The Real Way to Find a Job Today

The world has changed. And just as in all Nature, job seekers must adapt or suffer the consequences.

Our economy is far worse than the government reports. When people quit looking for jobs at the employment offices, after months or years of futility, the government stops counting them as unemployed. So even though it is reported that we have a 12% unemployment rate, in actuality, we are almost at the Great Depression levels. In reality, at least one in five Americans over 18 are unemployed.

When there is a job opening, almost at any level, more than 100 applicants apply. And when a job is posted online, thousands apply! Your chances of finding the proverbial “needle in a haystack” is much more likely today than finding the job you are looking for.

I help several thousand people each year find employment. I own a popular job board. And I hold job fairs across the country. Hundreds of HR managers know me by my first name. We converse regularly. And this is the wisdom that I have gleaned from them.

So what can you do? ADJUST!

One: Stop doing what does not work. – The definition of “insanity” is to continue doing what does not work and expecting good results.

Online job boards are not where you find a job anymore. They are where you find the companies that are hiring and the kind of person they are looking for. – But applying online for these jobs by emailing them your resume is almost always a complete waste of time.

Two: List your strengths and abilities.

The job you had may not be findable again. It may have disappeared or openings in that field are very few and far between. Limiting yourself to looking for that same job will probably be futile.

But you have talent, personality and /or experience that can translate into many different jobs. Right? Then it is time to open up to an array of different possibilities.

 Write a one page biographical sketch of yourself and your abilities. Make a list of all of your strengths. Be more general than specific. – For instance, if you were an auto repair mechanic, instead of writing, “I know how to fix cars,” you could say, “I am experienced at diagnosing problems and finding effective solutions.”
 Write down everything that you can do well, including the aspects of your personality that helps you get along and work effectively with others.
 Include any experience or proof that support these statements of your personal strengths.

This page is not to be sent to anyone. It is for your own reference.

Three: Become a chameleon! Adapt to your environment.

When using job boards, look for jobs that would benefit from having a person with your experience and abilities, regardless if it is in your particular field. In fact, especially if the opening does not correlate with something you have done before. – It is time to break the mold.

 Use your list of abilities and ask yourself: “How can my talents, personality and experience help this company in this position?”
 Write down the reasons why you strongly believe that you are the right person for this job. This is your biography.
 Of course, every application should include changes to your cover letter and resume. Customize them every time for each position.

Four: Find the name of the Hiring Manager responsible for filling this particular position.

 Call the office and ask the person who answers the phone. Or search Facebook and LinkedIn for current or previous employees of this company. Write them and ask if they know who the hiring manger is and if they would introduce you to them online. – Find out the name of the person who will either forward your resume to the Hiring Manger with a recommendation or make an introduction.

Five: Begin on the social networks: Attract with bait, not a hook.

 Once you find the person you need to talk to in order to get this job, start slowly and softly. Like sneaking up on a bird. – Do not begin by blasting them with your cover letter and resume. It won’t work.
 Begin by introducing yourself as someone who shares mutual interests. Find an article, cartoon, reference or personality that they would appreciate receiving. Begin by giving, not asking to receive. Create some connecting conversation between you and them.
 Ask questions about their field and expertise. Go into their profile and find things to praise them for or to inquire about. Continue to build a relationship with questions and comments that will position you as someone they enjoy sharing information with.
 This may take two to six weeks.

Six: Tug on the line and set the hook.

 After they have responded to you at least twice, then customize your list of talents and abilities to the position for which this person is hiring and send them a brief inquiry: “I am looking for this position with a company like yours. Can you suggest a good place for me to begin looking?”
They will probably ask to see your cover letter and resume. When you send it to them, ask for their suggestions on how to make it better. – Hiring managers usually enjoy giving applicants constructive advice if asked. – This is a good way to get them involved in your job search. And it will greatly increase your chances of getting the job.

Seven: Use your voice!

 Once you have made a good connection online or been given an introduction, give them a call and introduce yourself again by voice.
 First impressions are lasting impressions. Be ready for this call. Be awake, energetic, light and friendly; but, do not be presumptive or frivolous. Show deference and respect. But sound confident in your abilities to make a positive difference for their company.

Eight: If you do not have a job, then spend at least 8 hours a day looking for one.

 Set a goal of finding and beginning 5 new hiring contacts every day. By the end of each month, you should make your goal to have begun building relationships with 100 companies.

This is the new way to find employment in the 21st Century. Ignore this reality to your own detriment. Adapt to it and you will survive.

Thank you for a wonderful resource. My realtor told me about the site yesterday when I asked her about handyman services. I placed an ad this morning and received a call about 15 minutes later!
