New Rules for Government Contractors

Posted by on in For Businesses
New benchmarks have gone into effect for companies contracting with the Federal Government. Under the new regulation, contractors are now required to set annual benchmarks and measure their progress in hiring and recruiting disabled veterans and other vets protected by law. There are no set penalties for companies that do not comply. But the government will require that companies that receive contracts show good faith and a sincere effort to implement programs and hiring initiatives for US veterans. Patricia Shiu, director of the department's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, said in an email. “Failure to achieve a goal is not...

Veteran Ambassador: 1st Sgt. Carmichael

Posted by on in News
First Sergeant Wally Carmichael, an Army Medic, is retiring soon. He has chosen to take on the responsibility of spreading the HirePatriots Jobs Safety Net in his state of Hawaii. We are honored to be represented by this US veteran. He is very good at understanding HirePatriots and communicating it in its simplest form. This probably comes from many years of leading Army medics. Wally has already started a business: Top Fit Training. "Coach" Carmichael had allowed middle age to give him a hug around the middle and he had slipped further from being in shape than he realized. He took...

REINTEGRATION: THE FINISH LINE (PART 5 OF 5) At this point in your journey through life you have come to realize that things can work out, nothing comes free and at times you have to do things that may be undesirable. Congratulations, in reaching this realization you have crossed the finish line, ending the first chapter of your new life and new outlook. This is the story of a Navy Petty Officer and his family's struggles after he retired from military service. Here is a side story not included in this article. My wife, Tori, and I founded HirePatriots and have worked at it virtually every waking hour of everyday for the last 10 years. We are motivated by faith in a vision and empowered by a passion that provides constant strength and endurance. We are Christians and we are certain that this is God’s plan and purpose for our lives. To give you a glimpse of our daily lives here are some of the things we did this week:  We created and presented a 45 minute PowerPoint to the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association, wrote a grant request and created a PowerPoint...

Reintegration: Hitting the Wall

Posted by on in News
HITTING THE WALL (THE STIGMA) What do we think of every time that we want something to happen so badly and we think that we have everything in place but there is that one thing that always tends to stand in the way? I like to call it a wall; some people prefer to call it an obstacle. I prefer a wall because there is always a way around a wall, you can go over it, under it, around it or through it if you have the means. What you have to realize at this point is that it’s all...

Were U Watching TV in the 1950's?

Posted by on in News
I was raised in the 1950's when TV was brand new. The first TV set I saw was about 5 inches square. Most of the day the TV had no shows at all. There was just a static image on an american Indian for hours. Before my parents got home from work I would watch the few TV day shows. Who remembers Howdy Doody? Engineer Bill? Sheriff John? The Life of Riley? Wild Bill Hitchcock, Gene Autry? Roy Rogers? And my favorite, Fess Parker as Davy Crockett?  ...

Reintegration: Hitting Your Stride

Posted by on in News
HITTING YOUR STRIDE (PART 3)   At this point in your journey you have established a routine that may likely involve going to the gym, working a job that pays roughly $8.50 - $10.00 per hour, and maybe going to school but you are reaching for more.  You had goals, dreams and ambitions but things seem to be consistently out of reach. Honestly you are right, it seems like you have problems working for others and the way that they may speak to you. At times your only goal is getting to a new job so that you can...

How Patriotism Can Catch Fire!

Posted by on in News
The establishment of a HirePatriots chapter is important also because we need people to be continually sharing and speaking on behalf of US veterans and their families. Every veteran and military spouse, even we children of veterans, have stories to share that can edify others and inspire respect, courage and love for country and those that defend it. Having a robust gathering of such patriots will attract more and more people. Patriotism will glow and then catch flame and burst into fire. Local students can come and read their essays and share the video interviews and pictures about their community’s veterans....

How to Build a Famous Brand

Posted by on in News
What we need are hundreds of HirePatriots.com chapters all across America. Most businesses do not have an effective community outreach. They focus myopically on manufacturing, distribution and sales. It is difficult for companies to break out of the box and to approach making profits in a new way. I can hear them say to themselves, “This is the way our business has always been run.” But the world has changed. Businesses that stay the same will fade away. The world has become very small. The Internet made communicating with others anywhere in the world easy to do. Socializing almost constantly with others...

My conviction: I hope it is yours too!

Posted by on in News
This is my conviction and I hope it is yours too: When we the people permit our government to send our young men and women, our 18 year old sons and daughters, to the horrors of war we must accept the responsibility that comes with that. We cannot fail to do all that we can to repair the harm and hardship they endure for doing so on our behalf. This has absolutely nothing to do with politics! It has nothing to do with whether you agree with a war or not. It is simply an obligation that we inherit when we...

FINDING YOUR PACE (PART 2) “Finding your pace” What does that mean to you when it comes to transitioning back into society from the military? To the majority of our nation’s veterans it means that they have gotten out of the military with big dreams and ambitions and they are ready to hit the ground running. Then reality hits and they realize that life isn’t structured the way they’re accustomed to and they have to start over like everyone else who is going through a career change. This realization can be crippling to their self-confidence and that confidence is what...

A Great Help to Seniors Citizens

Posted by on in News
Many senior citizens use the One Day job board on HirePatriots.com to get the help that they otherwise just could not afford. A lot of senior citizens live on limited, set incomes. When something breaks and must be done, they may not be able to do it themselves and also cannot afford a professional tree trimmer, plumber, electrician, or handyman.  If it were not for HirePatriots.com’s One Day job board many things would just go undone and these elderly citizens’ quality of life would continue to deteriorate. They are so happy to have young, local military come over and help them...

REINTEGRATION: THE STARTING LINE (PART 1 of 5)

Posted by on in News
This is the first part of a five part miniseries focusing on the process known as reintegration for our nation’s services members. Over the next few weeks I will talk about the five parts of reintegration that I have titled: The Starting Line, Finding Your Pace, Hitting Your Stride, Hitting the Wall (The Stigma) and the Finish Line. The time known as reintegration can be extremely scary and stressful for our nation’s services members no matter what the age. Imagine giving up not only a career but a way of life, in the military everything is scheduled for you, you...
