Christian Service: Are You Called to Join Us?

Opportunity for Christian Service: Is God Calling You to Join Us?

The Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, created us to be his beloved children. His sent the Son to rescue us from sin and death by doing what we could not do: Dying in our place. – After his resurrection, Jesus sent the 3rd person of the Holy Trinity to fill our hearts and to give us faith, strength and wisdom. But most importantly, the Holy Spirit fills us with God’s love. And it is the presence of God’s Spirit within us that motivates us to serve others. – All Christians are called to love and to serve others, almost always beyond just our own inner circle and family.

The call to minister and to help others is a universal call for all true Believers. As James says, it is by considering others as more important than ourselves and by caring about their needs more than our own that proves we are indeed born again. “Without works our faith is dead.” – According to Christ and the Apostles, no one can truly say that they have “faith in God,” unless they also have a sincere and active love for others.

But ministry is not only so that we can help others. Strengthening and bettering the lives of others also improves our own life. The more that we bless others, the more we are blessed. The more we give to others, the more God gives to us. – We grow in the Spirit and mature and develop as children of God as we serve others, by the call of God and with the faith that increases within us as we depend on Him to accomplish the tasks He puts before us.

God called me and my wife to serve the US military, veterans and their families. He did not chose us because we were the best qualified or because we had the intelligence and experience to accomplish the task he set before us. In fact, we were called probably because we did not possess any of the talents required. – But this is exactly the people God picks for the ministry. He rarely selects the people we would choose. Instead, in his mercy and kindness, Jesus often calls those that everyone else would have ignored. – He does this to show the world his power working within us.

We had moved to Oceanside, CA, right next to Camp Pendleton Marine Base. We were getting older and wanted to downsize and simplify our life so that we could save money and prepare for retirement. Too, we were caring for my wife’s mother, who was slipping into the incomprehensible darkness of Alzheimer’s. She required constant attention. It was impossible for us to hold down traditional jobs and to care for my wife’s mother too.

Then one day a US Marine, who lived nearby with his young wife and two toddling children, knocked on our door. He had just gotten back home from another tour in Iraq. But during his deployment, hard times had hit his family. His wife was laid off from work. And that extra income was vital to paying all of their bills. The house payment and food were provided by her husband’s paycheck. But her earnings paid for the car, utilities and child care. – So by time this Marine returned home, the car was repossessed, the children were out of day care and the gas and electric had just been turned off for being too long overdue. – The wife had tried her best, but she could not find another job. With the children at home, and with their families on the other side of the country, she had no one and nowhere to turn for help. – And she kept their trouble secret from her husband. What could he do so far away? And she did not want him distracted from keeping himself and those with him alive.

So when this Marine in his mid-twenties knocked on my door, it was in response to coming home and finding his family living in desperation. Despite his extreme weariness and injuries suffered, he took immediate action. “Sir,” he said, standing as straight as a board at my front door. “I need to earn some money right away to get my utilities turned back on for my family. Is there anything you need done around your home or yard that I can do for you right now?”

This was actually the Lord knocking. And when we opened our door, it was actually a portal into ministry he had prepared for us. But we did not know it at that moment.

Certainly, we helped this US Marine and neighbor. But then a few days later, I met a local business man at a Chamber sundowner. His wife built websites. Then like lightening suddenly brightening a dark sky, an idea occurred to me. “What if there was a website and job board that local residents could use to hire Marines or their wives like the ones I had just helped, who needed to earn extra income?” Before a few weeks were passed, we paid for this man’s wife to build us that website: HireMarines.com.

My wife and I made up fliers and business cards that said: “HireMarines! / Residents: Do you have Chores or Repairs that need Doing? / Post your Jobs for Free / Or Call and we will Post your Jobs for You”
We took these to realtors, storage facilities, homeowner associations, community service clubs, veteran organizations, military barbershops, and walked downtown and posted them in windows and put them on counters. Within a few days, the job board was busy everyday with local residents hiring local Marines and their wives.

Then much to our amazement, TV stations began showing up at our house and having us tell our story. We were invited to talk on many of the region’s radio stations too. And the stories created by this simple outreach became so popular in the local newspapers that HireMarines was selected as being the Number 1 story of the year in San Diego.

Then an Admiral in the Navy called us and asked if it was alright for his sailors to take these jobs too. – “Of course!” we answered. Then the Admiral asked if we could change the name so that other branches of the military would know that they are welcome. Shortly afterwards, our site was renamed as HirePatriots.com. –HirePatriots now has many local sites and job boards across America. It ranks as one of the most popular websites in the United States. And that little site we created for the Marines at Camp Pendleton now gets 40,000+ visits regularly, every month.

In 8 years, this military ministry has grown tremendously! HirePatriots now serves local regions and communities in dozens of states. And we have held numerous military job fairs, military marriage retreats and welcome home parties. – Well beyond 100,000 US military members and veterans have been helped through this ministry. And we are expanding so quickly that our goal is now to assist that many every year.

It is not just me and my dear wife who are doing all of the work anylonger. With advent of WordPress blogs, we have veteran owned and patriotic businesses that represent us in their locations. And we have wonderful volunteers that help them to spread the word.

This is perhaps the most amazing thing: Eventhough our blog posts now reach many millions of people; and our representatives are being interviewed by TV, radio and press all across the country every week, the only people that respond to our message by wanting to get HirePatriots started in their region are always Christians! – We could get responses from anyone and any religion. But we don’t. God has built this nationwide Christian outreach so that other Christians can participate too.

And the Lord has impressed this verse upon my mind, “Those who work deserve to be paid.” So through seeking the Lord’s guidance, HirePatriots has created various ways for businesses and individual Christians to be financially compensated for the work they do to help spread and establish this ministry.

HirePatriots has a unique and powerful Cause Marketing strategy for businesses that want to sponsor HirePatriots in their area or across the country. They make a tax deductible contribution to our 501c3 non-profit and receive their own, customized HirePatriots website, job board and blog. We host and manage these sites at no charge. And we work together with these businesses to show them what we have learned and done to explode the visitors to HirePatriots sites and to get them regular media exposure too. – This greatly increases theses businesses’ brand recognition and often has a considerable impact upon their profits.

So unlike almost all other charities, HirePatriots creates a quid pro qou, a “You scratch our backs and we will scratch yours” relationship with our sponsors.—They spread the word so that we can help more US veterans, and we market their businesses on our websites, job boards, social networks and through traditional media.

But many Christians who reach out to us, saying that they feel God is calling them to minister with us do not own a business, and they cannot afford to work in the ministry for free. They have families to support and bills that must be paid. – So we teach them to do what my wife and I have done to keep ourselves afloat too.

When my wife and I were called to begin this Helps ministry, we had our life savings tied up in real estate. And we had a small carpet cleaning business that we were getting started with the help of my nephew. We were set for life. Our home was fully paid for and we had various streams of income coming in through our investments. But the time and costs for us to build the vision that God had given us eventually required all of our time and the sale and expenditure of all of our financial resources. Within 5 years, we were broke. – Praise the Lord!

Instead of using our life savings, we now had to seek the Lord for other ways to support our ministry and ourselves. – This is when the Cause Marketing idea came to us. It did not come fully developed. The Lord has led us through a process of learning and vision building. But now we are able to sustain ourselves again. We have learned many ways to earn a living while spreading the word and helping US military, veterans and their families. – We know how to help others provide for their needs and supply our own needs at the same time.

For anyone who earnestly feels called to join us in this ministry, we know how you can do so and provide for yourself and family. But the Bible says, “Many are called but few are chosen.” – If you are looking for standard employment with a salary, then this ministry is probably not for you. We live by faith in God’s providence. – We never know from month to month how much money we will have to pay our own bills. And we have learned not to be concerned about it. Everything we need is always provided for: Not always as timely and as much as we expect; but, exactly what we need to produce the fruit and maturity in our lives that God desires.

“If we earnest seek to make God preeminent in all that we do and think by the daily reading of the bible, prayer and meditation, our loving Lord will provide all that we need.” — No one can successfully enter into full time Christian service without fully believing this, or being willing to have God teach them.

Hello, I'm Mark Baird and I founded Hire Patriots. My wife and I are 'helpers.' We are concerned about meeting the practical needs of our US veterans and their families. We began a job board for local residents to post chores that they need help with. It has been very successful. Thousands of local US Military and veterans partially or entirely support themselves from our website. We are looking for others near US Military bases who would also like to have a HirePatriots.com website for their location. Find more information about our military programs at PatrioticHearts.org. And please make a contribution of any kind. Thank you.
