He Saved My Life’: Service Dog Helps Vet Overcome PTSD, Brain Injury

U.S. Marine Corp Cpt. Jason Haag (Ret.) and his German shepherd, Axel, appeared on “Fox and Friends Weekend” this morning to discuss the importance of service dogs to our veterans.

After two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, Haag returned home suffering from severe PTSD and a traumatic brain injury.

He reached out to K9s For Warriors, an organization that provides service dogs to wounded veterans. About five months later, he was matched with Axel.

“Without him, I wouldn’t be sitting here today,” Haag said of his four-legged friend, who not only helps him find items like his wallet and keys, but also keeps him calm.

“He’s woken me up from so many nightmares … nuzzling his nose up against my face. He knows exactly what’s happening to me. It’s amazing.”

Haag noted that the organization has matched up 150 wounded warriors and dogs, and there have been zero suicides.

“I wasn’t a dog person. I never had a dog as a kid,” Haag revealed. “I was skeptical when I went down there. I met Axel, it changed my life.”
