I began HireMarines.com in 2004, after a Marine from our local base knocked on my door and asked if he could help me with any chores around my home in order to earn some greatly needed extra money. It began as a free job board for residents to post jobs when they needed an extra hand with chores around their homes. In a few months, 40,000 Marines and residents a month were going to that site. Thousands of Marines and theiir families found financial relief. — Then I expanded it to include full time jobs from companies from across the country. Thousands of jobs posted by companies that want to hire US veterans are posted on this site. — Now, we are a 501c3 non-profit, Patriotic Hearts.
PEOPLE Magazine did a feature about us called America’s Heroes Among Us. It tells the story of how much our One Day/ Off Duty jobs helped a veteran, who lost his job, went homeless, along with his children and wife. Here in San Diego, where I started this project, some Marines and veterans support themselves and their families exclusively by taking these jobs every day. They can make $3000 – $5000 a month, after building a book of local neighbors that want help regularly. Others use the board to earn extra income while in the military or out. Military spouses are also encouraged to use the job board.
Here is how simply it works. Residents come to the site, click the Post One Day Jobs button, register and then post as many jobs as they like after that for free. They describe the work they need done, how much they are paying by the hour or by the job, leave their name, city and phone number or email address. – Marines come to the site, click One Day/ Off Duty Jobs button, find a job they want to do, click on it and contact the person that posted it. The name of our national page is HirePatriots.com because all the branches of the US Military have asked for their own website and job board. So now, wherever any US veteran, from any branch of the Armed Service, is based in the US, we can assist him in finding a job.
My challenge now is getting enough veterans to host their own site and job boards in their area and for their local base or bases. So I am looking for veteran owned businesses that want to have a customized site built for their business and their area.
We even build local sites for Marines that own businesses so that that they can get this program started in their area and get a lot more visits to their company website.
