Far too many Americans, especially those returning from our recent wars, are struggling, desperate and fearful. The demise of our economy and health care has created a myriad of problems. Men and women who once could work and proudly support their families are unable to do so. And many families no longer have any health care to provide for their dental and medical needs. And the elderly have nowhere to turn. As a result, people are dying, experiencing chronic pain, and losing their homes and families.
Times have been particularly tough these last few years for millions of US citizens. In the last 8 years of building HirePatriots, my wife and I have also struggled. Like so many, our quality of life has greatly diminished. – We have known what it is like to wonder how we are going to keep the utilities on or feed our kids. And we have experienced what it is like to no longer have a home and to have nowhere to turn to, when all friends and family have turned their backs.
It feels like being locked within a small jail cell with thick concrete walls and an iron door. It seems that there is no way out. It looks like your life is over. You fear that you will become a homeless family, struggling each day just to find food and shelter. – You feel fear and adrenalin rushing through your body and brain almost every hour. And it is impossible to sleep.
The most fortunate of us who are struggling like this are those who have faith that there is a loving and concerned Creator who is there to help us. – It is like the parable of the person who built his house upon a rock. The winds came and the storms lashed against his home with all their force, but it did not fall.
“The children of God face many troubles, but the Lord delivers them out of them all.” – Those that believe in God and put their trust in him are not protected from experiencing all of the woes and struggles of life. All of humanity knows pain and hardship, even the rich. In various ways everyone has their share of being surrounded by darkness.
Christians see trials and struggles as tests. God uses our difficulties to make us stronger. And he uses these experiences to turn our hearts of stone into flesh. They give us an opportunity to grow and become better human beings. We know that life has a greater meaning and purpose than just self-gratification. – Sometimes I feel like Life is an assembly line. As I get older and go down the road of life, my Creator adds more things to my character that make me more useful to Him, my family and others.
Those who believe in Christ are reminded throughout the Bible to “rejoice and be exceedingly glad when we face trials and tribulation because they are for the development of your faith.” – After the Apostle Paul was beaten by a mob and then shackled in the worst cell of a dungeon, he sang songs to God and praised him. “Rejoice in the Lord always,” he wrote.
And even Jesus himself was poor, homeless and rejected. He said, “Even the birds of the air and the animals of the earth have homes. But I, the Son of God, have nowhere to lay my head.” His happiness and peace was not determined by the circumstances of his life. And neither should ours be.
And we are continually reassured in every book of the Bible that God loves us, cares about us, and will provide for us. – “The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.”
King David wrote: “I prayed to the Lord and he answered me, delivering me from all of my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy!”
Jesus instructs us to trust in the love of God at all times. And he promises that if we do “God will provide everything you need.”
Consider your struggles and hardships as opportunities to grow and become a better person. They are invitations to experience a far more fulfilling life. If we are able to wait patiently and to trust God as we endure these seasons of hardship, God will pull us through. – Jesus said, “Rejoice and be exceeding glad, for great will be your reward in Heaven.”
Christians believe that this present world is temporary, and that it and all creation will someday “dissolve in intense heat.” We look forward to a new Earth on which God himself will live and rule. – “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and old earth had passed away… The home of God is now among his people. He will live with them and they will be his children. God himself will be with them. He will remove all of their sorrows, and there will be no longer any death, sorrow, crying or pain. For the old world with its evils are gone.”
“Wait patiently for the Lord. Yes, be brave and courageous! Wait patiently for the Lord.” – Psalms
