I went down to Florida for a couple weeks thawing out from the New York winter and I noticed a disproportionate amount of seniors still working. They are driving me from the airport, making my coffee, checking me in at the hotel, giving me tours and even serving me my food. What happened along the way I wondered that eliminated the possibility of them retiring?
As I spoke to some of them I learned they had good jobs but financial events happened they did not count on. Their 401K became a 201K, their money was all tied up in their house and the value went down, they were downsized before they were ready to retire and now were paying a grand a month for healthcare and even the early death of an income earning spouse vanished the plan for a nice retirement. From what I could see these people did everything right along the way except to have enough options in case something did not go as planned. I guess we all need more options.
The beach book I brought with me is “Flight Plan” by Brian Tracy. Brian Tracy has always been a favorite author of mine and a couple of years ago he was kind enough to provide me an endorsement quote for my book “The Unemployment Budget – Your Financial Survival Plan”. In his book “Flight Plan” on page 25 and 26 Brian writes about how we should “Develop Options Continually” and the need to “Increase your options”. He states “Successful people are continually developing options, just in case something doesn’t work out the way they had intended. They develop alternate courses of action to insure against unexpected setbacks or reversals. As a result, when things go wrong, as they always do, successful people remain calm and relaxed? They have already thought through the worst possible situations that could occur and have a plan ready-made to deal with them.” I guess we all need to increase our options so we can enjoy our retirement.
