Unemployment: Leading Cause of Heart Attacks!
“Joblessness poses no less a risk than smoking, diabetes and hypertension,” says Matthew Dupre, Professor of Medicine at Duke University. The greatest risk for heart attacks comes from ‘involuntary job loss,” particularly for those 50 years and older. – However retirement seems to have no such consequence.
After an 18 year study, involving 13,451 men and women the National Health Study determined that the loss of one job increases the chance of suffering heart attack by 22%. But each additional job loss, due to being laid off or fired, continues to increase the risk of a heart attack dramatically. After 4 job losses the odds of having a coronary seizure increase by 63%! -- No difference was calculable between sexes, races or socioeconomic condition.
“Not having a job causes heart attacks,” reaffirms Gina Lundberg, Professor of Medicine at Emory University. “Right now, too many Americans have jobs filled with stress or have no job at all. This is not good for their heart.”
By extrapolation we can also infer that U.S. veterans and their families, who experience tremendous stress, especially combat veterans and their loved ones, are at the highest risk. – But this is just another sacrifice that these exemplary Americans make on our behalf. – How can we ever appreciate those wonderful volunteers enough?
