Here is a bit of important advice: Keep your LinkedIn profile updated. I just rewrote mine and I am so embarrassed. Thousands of people have read my profile since I wrote it years ago. Sure, I have added a few more things occasionally; but I never carefully re-read what my profile was saying about me, my charity, my business and entrepreneurial efforts. So much has changed. And I am able to say what people need to read about me much better now. I cannot help but wonder how many missed opportunities I lost by having a LinkedIn profile that needed so much effort and editing to get properly updated.
I have known for many months that I needed to do this. I just always found reasons to focus on other things. Going back and re-doing what has already been done can seem like a waste of time. This does not apply when it comes to your LinkedIn profile.
For a long time, I was able to run my charity and my business almost exclusively through my inbox on LinkedIn. I would wake up every morning and then spend the day contacting the people that reached out to me after reading my blog posts and profile. That has happened less and less. I still have a lot of people reading my profile; but, not so many are connecting with me and asking me to contact anymore. – After rewriting my profile today, I am convinced that was the reason.
LinkedIn is by far the most important social network for me, HirePatriots, Patriotic Hearts and US Military Maintenance, and book sales: my principal endeavors. I have learned today that I need to give it the respect and attention it deserves. Like a horse that needs to be groomed regularly, so do our LinkedIn profiles.
